Stand Up to Autism : Autism Awareness Month, April 2014-15

Autism is a scary word. It's a word that registers as different, demented, or retarded. You may see people with autism as though they don't fit in, or as though they aren't like everyone else. Some people may even look at those with autism and see them as though they are oblivious to the world and don't have feelings like we do. If you've ever thought like this, it's okay. We've all made mistakes. But starting this month, April 2014, you will come to learn and know never to act like that again. So take some time to explore and learn about autism. You may find that people with this disorder aren't so different after all.

The Big Question : What is autism?
Answer: Autism is a condition some individuals are born with. It is categorized by difficulty with communication and social interactions. Forming relationships and applying practical concepts to situations can also be a challenge for people with autism. Autistic people generally need assistance throughout their entire life performing common tasks and socially connecting with others. Although these types of things are signs of autism, autistic people should not be treated any differently than anyone else. They may need a little help sometimes, but they still have feelings and can still see and hear just like you and me.

Fact: I'm sure you have all seen or met someone autistic. I know I have. Whether it's on TV, at school, or on the street, people with autism are spread out everywhere. Did you know that approximately 1 out of every 88 children are affected by autism or a similar disorder? It's true. These days, autism is more common that ever before. So join us, the Bullying Upstanders, in our campaign to stand up to autism.

The first autism campaign we had at our school was at a spirit assembly and went pretty well at raising money and showing people the cause of autism and why we are doing this. This year will be even bigger and better than last year. I will post what happened and pictures of the event as well, so see you then!
